To our most wonderful clients—

It was with a mixture of bittersweet excitement and giddy trepidation that we received the news that we would be allowed to welcome clients back into our facility starting on June 12th. This date marks almost three months to the day after we voluntarily closed our doors in the face of a looming public health crisis.

As many of you know, we were expecting this news to come later in the summer, as fitness studios had been originally forecasted for Phase 3 of the Government of Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy. However, we were hopeful that the hard advocacy efforts that we, along with countless other independent studios across the province, had been involved in would result in fitness services being bumped into an earlier date. Our hopes were answered this week, when Premier Kenney and Dr. Hinshaw announced that we would join other health and wellness services in Phase 2.

Ever the optimists – and the strategists – we have been planning for this outcome for several weeks, basing our new policies and procedures on the ones for physiotherapy, chiropractic services and registered massage therapy. These occupations operate in similar capacities to fitness training services, but with even more physical contact between clients and practitioners.

Similarly, we followed closely as fitness facilities in other locations released their reopening guidelines, allowing us to see best practices in other areas of our country, and the world. We felt confident that the measures recommended for our industry across the globe would align well with those that would come from our Provincial government.

As such, we took the calculated risk of creating an interim reopening plan and operational strategy that reflected the strictest of these practices so that we would be ready to open our doors as soon as it was cleared by our health officials.

Three weeks ago, we announced this interim strategy, and we began to train clients outdoors in our innovative fitness PODS. These completely private training stations were conceptualized knowing that we would be able to port them directly into our studio almost immediately upon receiving the go ahead from the authorities.

As such, we are pleased to announce that we are ready, and excited, to be starting our soft launch of in-studio personal training starting today.

Our main studio has been converted into six individual 10’x10′ training stations, each equipped with their own equipment, disinfectant wipes and sprays, hand sanitizers, and optional-use gloves and face masks. There is also a seventh fully-equipped instructor station, and an additional 10’x10′ instructor alley separating the space, allowing for the safe distancing of multiple trainers, as required.

Beyond this, we will be able to operate with the bay doors open (weather permitting), allowing for maximal airflow in the main training space and across the facility. This room has a maximum interim-occupancy of eight people (including trainers and instructors), down from its maximum occupancy of 20 people.

In addition to the main studio stations in the central area, we also have two Olympic-standard lifting stations for our clients requiring more specialized equipment, and continue to have our assessment room available for private consults and corrective work. Each space far exceeds the three metre minimum physical distancing requirements for high-intensity activity, and also houses its own private equipment and full sanitizing station.

We are also excited to note that we will also be adding two small group fitness classes to our existing schedule of Monday 6pm, Wednesday 12pm and 6pm, and Saturday 11am.

Starting on June 30th, we are excited to add a six-person class on Tuesday and Thursday at 5pm. These times will be dedicated to choreographed cardio options that will complement our existing strength options.

As promised, our virtual services – including Online Personal Training and the Signature Series Virtual Studio – will continue. We are looking forward to adding even more specialized online content and virtual workshops in the near future.

At this time, our smaller studio will be converted into a staff-only area, and will be used primarily to store extra equipment, furniture and PPE. We will explore the possibility of expanding services into this area when we feel that we have the capacity to do so safely, while also maintaining our commitment to exceptional quality of care and service.

We are completely confident in our ability to continue to offer you the very highest standards for health and safety. We are, and always have been, fully dedicated to ensuring that the well-being of every single client is at the forefront of everything we do. After all, your health is literally our business and, like you, we also have a lot on the line when it comes to protecting ourselves, our family members and our livelihood.

We promise to not only meet, but to exceed, the guidelines put into place, and to continue to monitor the pandemic trends on a daily basis. Should a situation arise where we feel that we are no longer able to continue operating safely due to a resurgence or rise in risk, we promise to once again lead the way for civic responsibility and to take whatever steps may be necessary to ensure that the health and safety of our most vulnerable populations is always prioritized.

“Fitness for every body. Health for everyone.”

This is the motto that guides us, in this and in every decision that we make, and we will continue to honour our mission and vision as we navigate our way out of this crisis.

We are extremely excited to welcome our community back into our space safely, responsibly, ethically and respectfully.

Toni Harris and Zita Dube-Lockhart
